The NICE1 cools and compresses from a small bedside box. This page walks you through what it is, how to use it, and the safety details. Takes about 4 minutes.
What you have
No ice cubes. No assembly. The unit uses a small internal water reservoir that we fill at delivery — you only ever press two buttons: temperature and compression.
3-step setup
Wrap snugly over the joint or area being treated — over a thin layer of clothing or the dressing your surgeon left. It should feel firm but not pinch. If you can slide two fingers between the wrap and skin, it's right.
The hose locks into the front of the box with a single firm push. Listen for the click. If it leaks air, push again until it seats.
Standard wall outlet. The unit will start at the default temperature and compression. Adjust with the front-panel buttons. The wrap inflates and chills within 30–60 seconds.
Pick your temperature
NICE1 has five preset cold stages, designed to match where you are in recovery. Start at the colder end after surgery; step warmer as you progress.
NICE engineered the unit so it physically cannot get colder than 42°F — the threshold below which ice burns and tissue damage become a risk. You can leave it on the maximum setting safely.
Compression
Compression helps move swelling out of the joint. Start lower; step up if it feels comfortable.
…and three modes for how the pressure delivers:
Zero — cold only, no pressure. Static — constant pressure. Intermittent — pump cycles on and off, often the most comfortable for long sessions.
Your schedule
A typical recovery pacing — your surgeon's protocol always takes precedence. When in doubt, follow their post-op instructions.
20–30 min sessions every 1–2 hours while awake. Coldest setting (42°F). Low compression (13 mmHg) or zero. Goal: knock down swelling and post-op pain.
30–45 min sessions, 4–6× per day. 42–46°F. Step up to medium compression (26 mmHg) if tolerated. Use after PT and before bed.
45–60 min, 3–4× per day. 46–50°F. Medium compression. Anchor sessions to physical therapy and any swelling flare-ups.
30–45 min as needed, often 1–2× per day. 50–54°F. Use after exercise or long days on your feet.
30 min as desired. 54–58°F. Use after intense PT, the gym, or pushing into new ranges of motion.
Safety
NICE1 is engineered to be hard to misuse — but here's the short list anyway.
The unit will not cool below 42°F. Leaving it on maximum is safe; many people use it overnight in timed sessions.
Medical concerns go to your surgical team. For a problem with the device itself (won't cool, error code, leaking), reply to your order confirmation email and we'll handle it.
